This Talish rug was woven in the Southeast Caucasus during the late 19th century.
It features a pattern of energetic palmettes that alternate between icey blue and magenta on a navy ground filled with small rosettes scattered about like a field of colorful wildflowers. The magenta was achieved with cochineal, an insect-derived dye. Framed by a main border of stepped polygon shaped rosettes in a wild array of tones including oranges, greens, pinks, blues, yellow and brown atop a bright ivory ground that provides contrast and brightness . The main border is sandwiched between two minor “s" borders that pull from the same wide palette.
In good condition with some wear throughout (as pictured). All four edges have been reinforced for longevity.
