Day After the Premiere, 2020
Hand embroidered work using rayon floss over on top of found cotton toile. Four figures on a boat can be found stitched on top of the toile design. Nearby what appears to be a small explosion has gone off. The dynamic texture and lustrous sheen of the polychrome stitching pops against the consistent, flat red and white of the toile. The piece is beautifully framed by the artist and would be a stunning addition to any art collection.
The piece is a Fantasia imagining performers fleeing Paris after the ill-fated premiere of the Rite Of Spring.
The Rite of Spring is a ballet and orchestral concert work by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was written for the 1913 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company; the original choreography was by Vaslav Nijinsky with stage designs and costumes by Nicholas Roerich. The avant-garde nature of the music and choreography caused a sensation.
