This ceremonial tent was hand appliquéd in Gujarat India during the early to mid-20th century.
This rare full ceremonial tent is a wonderful example of traditional textile art once central to communal and spiritual life. Handcrafted with intricate appliqué work, the tent’s panels are alive with botanical motifs, trees of life, and auspicious symbols—including elephants, which evoke strength, wisdom, and protection. Inscribed with Gujarati script and richly embellished with dynamic geometry and floral rhythms with bold tones of indigo, madder red , and mustard that nicely contrast against the undyed cotton.
Constructed by artisan women, often from Rabari or Vagadia communities, such tents were both functional and ceremonial—portable sanctuaries that traveled with nomadic pastoralists or graced special occasions in settled villages. Stitched from multiple panels and lovingly patched over time, this tent is as much a living record as it is a textile: an enduring emblem of craftsmanship, cultural identity, and collective memory.
In very good condition and fully intact. Hearty enough for ceremonial outdoor as originally intended.
