This rug was hand-hooked during the middle of the 20th century in the Northeast United States.
This lively rug features a colorful and idiosyncratic design of squares and other geometric shapes in the style of patchwork quilts. Each shape is outlined in black, to give a definition to the design. Tightly rendered and very refined for the type with excellent color selection including marled yarns intended to mimic the patterned fabrics traditionally found on patchwork quilts. One block near the bottom has the initials "G E" and the date "59" for 1959 hooked in. Created by a very talented rug hooker and from the collection of the famed quilt and Americana collector Jonathan Holstein, known among other things for his seminal exhibition at the Whitney Abstract Design in American Quilts in 1971.
In excellent condition, with minimal wear. Various yarns hooked onto a burlap back, dense handle.
