This pictorial rug was woven in Bolivia during the third quarter of the 20th century.
It depicts a female farmer harvesting what is likely coca leaves. She wears a striped dress, sandals, a striped bag, and a hat which many indigenous people wear. One of the highest virtues a woman can have in the indigenous culture is having a strong work ethic which is exemplified in the composition. It is rendered on strong red ground with pinks, oranges, beige, and a purply gray and framed by a wide border composed of large blocks of color.
In very good condition. The colors were likely more vibrant originally but have faded over time. There is some color run in the beige tones but is consistent throughout.
