Silk Kayseri rug handwoven in Turkey during the second quarter of the 20th century.
The Mihrab, or prayer niche, is a bright red (softened by wear) and contains a vase sprouting branches with different blossoms and flowers on each branch. Many of these designs are descended from Ottoman court work which can be seen in the intricacy of the design. The borders are many and ornate and the main border is composed of an expertly woven floral meander.
The cartouche above the Mihrab contains writing that is hard to decipher.
In fair condition, with worn pile but intact foundation, and visible design throughout. Pile is still present in the border and other small areas throughout. Edges have been reinforced for longevity. Has a light and airy handle.
