This Yei rug was woven by Navajo weavers during the first quarter of the 20th century in the Southwest United States.
The design of this rug is derived from Navajo sand painting. It features three “Yei” or holy people on a natural grey background and framed by a red border. The first two smaller figures are woven holding arrows (potentially). The third figure is a rainbow guardian, whose body surrounds the figures on three sides, as a form of protection. All the figures are female as women are traditionally rendered with square heads.
In excellent condition, signs of wear consistent with age. Flatwoven, with a soft handle.
