This Nakshi Kantha was crafted in East Bengal during the early 20th century.
Kantha is a Bengali folk tradition of embroidering textiles using recycled cloth. This Kantha features a water scene with a lotus floating in the center and in each corner. Local birds (Doyel) and fish (Ilish), butterflies, boteh (kalka in local context) are embroidered in red, black, and yellow thread on a recycled cotton base. The "chok par" or eye border which offers protection from the evil eye, often found on saris, frames the whole.
