This Peking Chinese rug handwoven in Eastern China during the turn of the 20th century.
This elegant rug features a three-column design of blossoms woven in ivory, on the deep indigo blue field. The border motif bleeds out into the main field and is composed of floral sprays and pearls. Pearls are a common symbol in Chinese rugs, and signify purity and perfection as well as acting as a charm against fire, flood, and disaster.
Peking rugs were created for the British market and the palette was utilized to emulate the look of blue and white Chinese porcelain which was extremely popular in the West.
