Vintage Azeri rug handwoven in Azerbaijan during the 1980s.
We believe this rug was woven in Azerbaijan as part of the renaissance of natural dyeing and small batch techniques that began in the 1980s, lead by the DOBAG Carpet Initiative in Turkey, though it soon spread to other regions.
It is woven with hand-spun wool, and naturally dyed using indigo and madder root. The boteh design on this rug is set at an angle, and is known as the "Mother Daughter" boteh: notice the smaller boteh inside the larger one. This design is often found on small format rugs, but rarely is it depicted in such a large format. Rendered this way, the design is truly impressive, especially since the scale is so unique.
The inky blue field is filled with red, blue, and tan tiny boteh, with rosettes and other symbols scattered throughout. The middle border is also composed of smaller boteh, sandwiched between two borders with floral meanders.
In Very Good condition, with minimal signs of wear. Pile is low and very soft, with a hefty handle.
