This Turkmen prayer rug was handwoven by the Chodor people during the 19th century in Central Asia.
It features a prayer motif with two columns of serrated polygons in navy and rust on an ivory ground which is segmented by a thin central axis of upward pointing arrows. The central axis pierces through the top borders working as the perfect qibla - pointing the way towards Mecca. The tightly rendered pattern unravels near the top of the mihrab wonderfully transforming just like the tendrils of a plant reaching towards the light. Yellow, brown, and aubergine complete the limited but effective palette
The Chodor are a subtribe of the Yomud Turkmen. This is a rare type in a rare format with a whole lot of character. Great collectible piece!
Very good condition with some wear, it has been professionally conserved to protect the structure and integrity of the piece without over restoring.
