Mafrash Cargo Bag - 3'6 x 1'10 x 1'3

Regular price $750.00 Sale

This fully intact cargo bag or "Mafrash" was handwoven during the 20th century.

This three-dimensional "box" was intended for use by nomads to store bedding in their tents, and for use as cargo bags while traveling. There is some speculation that these were sometimes also used as "cradles" but there is limited documentation to support this. Each of the four kilim sides of the bag features fields of "boteh" or paisley with each row alternating direction and in a variety of colors including red, green, ivory, orange, purple, and pink on a navy field. The bottom is a striped kilim in yellow, purple, and brown and the top is left open with metal loops woven into the perimeter to allow the bag to be properly fastened while traveling. In contemporary interiors, Mafrash is often used to make small tables or ottomans.

In excellent condition, signs of wear consistent with age.
