This Nakshi Kantha was crafted in Bengal during the early 20th century.
Kantha is a Bengali folk tradition of embroidering textiles using recycled cloth. This Kantha features a large central bouquet of flowers in a vase flanked by four smaller bouquets in vases. The innovative design sticks to classic form by keeping the main bouquet in the center as a mandala with the smaller bouquets in each cornice. The leaves of the central bouquet are also interestingly rounded into pinwheel form. The outer border was taken from an old sari edge and reattached around the perimeter. The words "Hehar Dadu apne Thakur ka Aashirwad le" - Take blessings Grandson from Lord Krishna are wonderfully rendered in polychrome near the top.
