This Heriz rug was handwoven during the turn of the 20th century.
It features a classic Heriz patterning with a geometric central medallion on a patinated red ground. The four cornices mirror the design from the medallion in a different color combination. The main border is composed of an alternating rosette and serrated leaf pattern, while the minor borders feature floral meanders. It has a lovely and desirable combination of faded reds, soft golds, vibrant corals, and multiple shades of blues found in both the sky and the sea. Ivory is used sparingly to emphasize details.
Great quality 19th-century Heriz rugs are often referred to as Serapi. Rugs that feature characteristics of both younger Heriz and older Serapis are often referred to as "baby Serapi" in the trade.
In very good condition for its considerable age. Low pile with a sturdy handle.
