This Nakshi Kantha was crafted in Bengal during the late 19th Century.
Kantha is a Bengali folk tradition of embroidering textiles using recycled cloth. At first inspection, this Kantha appears to be missing the top but there is a tradition of making certain textiles (Dharaniya) as wall hangings for special occasions. Like this piece, they are directional with an unbounded top. This piece features a main panel with a central flower surrounded by organic flowering vines and free-flowing running stitches. The bottom panel has a lovely rendition of three elephants. Elephants are a very auspicious and potent symbol in local culture. They represent wisdom and strength as well as having regal and divine connotations dependent on the intention of the artisan.
In very good condition for its age with some light wear to threads and charming old folk repairs (as pictured)
