This blanket was hand-knit and of wool and silk in North America at the end of the 19th century.
It features abstracted roses that alternate with open squares and is framed by a ruffled silk border. The roses in rendered in light and dark pink petals with light and dark green leaves and each features a yellow silk center. The small blanket has a soft and dainty feel and was likely intended for a newborn baby.
In very good condition, signs of wear are consistent with age. Backed with fabric. Has a soft and fluffy handle.
Special Provenance: Nelson Family, Portland, Oregon
Part of a collection of four quilts made by one person and passed down as family heirlooms. A portrait of the maker was saved by the family and can be seen in the last image. According to an oral history, the pieces were all made by the great-aunt of Mr. Nelson's mother.
