This Boatou rug was woven in Northern China during the early 20th century.
It features a nature scene in the style of classical Chinese landscape painting known as Shan Shui. The vertical composition of the rug invites the viewer to travel through the scene starting in the foreground and moving up to the tree and continuing to the night sky. Shan Shui painting has been described as an object for the viewer's mind as it endeavors to capture the emotions and rhythms of nature. It is strongly connected to Taoist traditions where people are encouraged to maintain a symbiotic relationship with the ebbs and flows of the natural world.
Travelers are sometimes depicted pausing to reflect on life's path or just to appreciate the beauty of the natural world. Here, the traveler along with his loyal steed, pauses at the tree gazing upwards with his hands clasped behind his back. At the same time a bird leers down from one of the branches. A simple palette composed of brown, white and an array of blues that range from turquoise to midnight blue is strikingly composed showcasing both proficiency in indigo dyeing and command in its application.
