This Tabriz rug was likely handwoven in the workshop of master weaver Hadji Jalili during the late 19th century.
It features a classic hunting motif against a backdrop of scrolling arabesques on a desirable burnt orange ground that is highly characteristic of Hadji Jalili weaving. The arabesque grows from central palmettes sprouting leaves and floral forms while providing a lush landscape for various animals to frolic. The animals are rendered in pairs with the most prominent showcasing lions hunting deer near the bottom. Wonderful tones of orange and cornflower blue have patinated in a smooth and nuanced fashion to celebrate the rug's age by adding interest through abrash.
The pile is low and densely woven, with a strong handle. In very good condition, edges reinforced for longevity. A real collector's piece.
