This Nakshi Kantha was crafted in Bengal during the early 20th century.
Kantha is a Bengali folk tradition of embroidering textiles using recycled cloth. This Kantha features a wild scene centered on a lotus flower. There are a variety of animals including horses, elephants, bulls and birds as well as the moon, sun and a mysterious yellow man or men. The yellow man can be seen in what are likely different scenes holding a gun, holding a sword and most unusually peeking out from behind a palm tree. It is embroidered in yellow, green, red black and blue. The border is a scrolling flowering vine.
