This saddle blanket was woven in Tibet at the turn of the 20th century.
These rugs are known as a Makden and were intended to be used under a horse saddle in Tibet. This piece has been woven in two pieces and attached with cotton fabric. Two leather pieces have been woven in to attach the blanket to the animal. Each half features a central lotus with mountains symbolic or the terrestrial and clouds symbolic of the celestial. Each side features one small stupa motif which represents the nature of reality or the Dharma. The outer border features very animated and abundant cloudbands which are seen either as shooting rain or rays of lights in all directions. This references the cloud of dharma which is the final stage of awakening.
