Palepai from Lampung in Sumatra, Indonesia, handwoven during the late 19th century.
This tampan, or ceremonial textile, was woven by the Paminggir people of Lampung. This particular type of ceremonial textile is called a palepai. It is a very prestigious type of textile that was reserved for special occasions like initiations in adulthood, marriages, and deaths. This palepai shows a seated figure with curling limbs wearing head-dresses or horns, in the traditional colorway of red, blue and yellow. In the past, palepai were passed down to the eldest son of the local clan or district leader as a show of hereditary leadership.
In very good condition, signs of wear consistent with the significant age. Hand-embroidered on cotton, has a slightly stiff but airy handle.
