early 20th century lilihan rug from w iran with large central and cornices, with elaborate and unusual borders in peaches, indigo blues, and reds

Antique Lilihan Rug - 5'5 x 6'2

Regular price $1,175.00 Sale

Lilihan rug handwoven in during the first quarter of the 20th century.

This stunning and unusual Lilihan features a large central medallion on a peach-pink field, with four cornices. The medallion and cornices are composed of elaborate curvilinear floral motifs, contrasting with the simplicity of the field, which is relatively empty save for the mahi motifs surrounding the cornices. Mahi directly translates to 'fish' but the motif has been interpreted in multiple ways, from fish to leaves. The borders are equally as elaborate and feature a floral meander for the minor border, and an unusual floral motif reminiscent of sea anemones for the main border.

In very good condition, signs of wear consistent with age. Some wear concentrated in particular areas (pictured). Pile is low, with a sturdy handle.
