This Akstafa rug was handwoven in the Caucasus during the late 19th Century.
It features a field of three 8-pointed star medallions each flanked by classic "Akstafa" birds. The Akstafa bird is a peacock-like mythological bird. The main border is composed of alternating hooked cartouches. Shabby chic in a patinated and worn palette of red, blue, yellow, and green with brown and ivory.
In fair condition, with significant wear throughout, as pictured. The pile is low and thin with a light floppy handle.
