This Luri rug handwoven during the first quarter of the 20th century.
This stunning rug features a vertical medallion design that operates like an axis mundi on a deep indigo ground. The field is filled with a fantastical world of flora and fauna wonderfully painted with contrasting tones of reds, yellow, ivory, and aubergine. The most prominent and important motifs are the trees representing the archetypical cosmic or world tree with birds in its branches and a serpent near it's trunk. There are multiple types of birds including peacocks which often represent everlasting life as well as a male and female figure near the bottom of the composition.
In very good condition with minimal wear and a full meaty pile.
