This Mortar was hand-carved from one piece of wood in the Nuristan region of Afghanistan during the 19th century. It features simple bands of diamonds and zigzags with a central rosette near the top and carved handles on either side. This type of mortar was usually used to crush dried fruit and nuts. In good condition with some seams, the largest of which has been charmingly patched with old metal.
