Caucasian Kuba rug from the first quarter of the 20th century.
The design of this sweet little rug is composed of three central medallions. Brightly rendered geometric shapes and symbols fill in the field in a freeform manner. Look for combs, rosettes, and many a protective symbol on the deep indigo blue field. Of special note are the two butterflies above the central medallion. The main border is quite idiosyncratic in its execution of the design. The minor interior border is a simple but unusual diamond design that only insulates the length of the rug and never makes the turn to complete the span across the width edges. This rug is so funky and presents an excellent example of the truly unique and handmade, showcasing the weaver's personality and sense of play.
In fair condition, with wear throughout, and pronounced in the top central area of the rug (pictured). Pile is low, with a soft handle. Edges have been reinforced and the weakest point has been woven to a fabric backing to prolong longevity.
