This Khotan rug was woven in Northwest China, which is also known as East Turkestan, during the second quarter of the 20th century.
This rug features a depiction of a bowl of fruit, a flower filled vase and various other auspicious symbols on a rich terracotta ground. The terracotta is nicely balanced by a but patinated celadon ground main border and a canary yellow ground minor border of repeating shou symbols. Shou is a very auspicious symbol that represents longevity. These rugs are often referred as "Samarkand" rugs as Samarkand was at one time the major gathering point for the rugs woven in Northwest China.
In Very Good condition. The pile is evenly worn and low but with a sturdy handle. Some areas have been rewoven at some point in its history but are professionally done.
